The Cherries knew going into Molineux that Wolves had won all four of their previous games.
Bournemouth punished the Old Gold by exploiting the hosts’ errors just as O’Neil believed his team was making progress.
O’Neil was subjected to unpleasant taunts from Bournemouth supporters during his match against his former team on a historic day.
Gary O’Neil reacts to Wolves defeat
After seeing the events of match day 13, Wolves fans demanded that O’Neil be fired, putting more pressure on the manager.
Before the game, doubts concerning the manager’s choice of team were somewhat addressed when O’Neil gave an explanation of why he started Mario Lemina in defense.
The manager concentrated on Bournemouth after the game, citing Express and Star, because what had worked in Wolves’ 4-1 victory over Fulham did not work against them.
“Obviously, in retrospect, if we had the game again, we’d try something different, but it’s difficult to change a starting XI that performed the way it did away from home (at Fulham).”
When questioned about his team selection, the manager admitted that it was partially to blame for the loss, with individual mistakes on the field being the other problem.
Before clarifying that his team had practiced in areas where Bournemouth could provide a threat, O’Neil stated, “There were a lot of mistakes that gave us no chance of winning the game.”
“We had meetings and prepared it on the grass after I mentioned Senesi’s practice of putting balls in behind the back line, so giving up a penalty in the first minute for something we knew was coming was far below the standard we’ve set in the last four games.”
The manager felt let down by some of the things he saw on the pitch at Molineux, with three penalties won by one player for the first time in Premier League history.
O’Neil’s subtle dig at Jose Sa
Except for Jorgen Strand Larsen, who scored a brace, it was a horrible day for everyone at Wolves.
Jose Sa had a memorable game against Bournemouth, giving up two penalties for similar fouls on Evanilson. O’Neil made reference to these expensive mistakes after the game.
We didn’t need to play back passes in either of the two outrageous back pass penalties that were committed. We had the option to play ahead.
Even though the boys continued to fight and were able to re-engage, there are things there that give us no chance at all today.
The manager stated, “You can’t make that simple of an error that many times in a Premier League game and hand points to the opposition.”
O’Neil was alluding to the three goals Bournemouth scored as a result of Toti Gomes’ penalty and the two that Sa gave up.
