Gary Lineker, who was perplexed by the decision to disallow Southampton’s second goal against Brighton, has taken aim at Premier League officials.
On Friday night, Saints and Brighton tied 1-1 after Cameron Archer’s goal was controversially disallowed due to an offside call. Adam Armstrong, his teammate, had gone offside and was judged to be interfering with play, but Archer was onside from Ryan Fraser’s cross.
The Premier League’s Match Centre X account said following a nearly five-minute VAR review: “The referee’s call of no goal was checked and confirmed by the VAR as Armstrong was in an offside position and deemed to be impacting [Brighton goalkeeper Bart] Verbruggen’s ability to play the ball.”
Russell Martin was indignant at the judgment. The Southampton manager contended that Verbruggen was not distracted by Armstrong because the cross went behind him and the Brighton keeper couldn’t have stopped Archer’s attempt anyhow. On Match of the Day, Lineker adopted the same position, but Dion Dublin reacted negatively.
Lineker declared, “I actually completely agree with what Russell Martin says there.” In fact, his explanation is flawless. I don’t understand this choice. Since Archer is onside, it goes behind Armstrong, preventing him from influencing the goalie’s movement.
“They’re saying that he flicks a leg out and he impacts the keeper,” Dublin retorted. But that’s where they’re wrong,” Lineker retorted. He has no effect on him.
“Yes,” Dublin replied, “therefore the error is in the way it’s written. That is the issue. “Well, no not really because I don’t think it does impact the goalkeeper in any way, shape, or form,” Lineker stated in response.
Dublin contended, “It must, Gary, because the keeper is at the near post with the first pink shirt far post.” He doesn’t, Lineker said.
In conclusion, Danny Murphy said, “I agree with that (Dublin’s point).” I do believe that Verbruggen must wait, but he will never get there. However, the truth is that we don’t want to see objectives rejected because of it.
Martin bemoaned at his press conference following the game: “Is his move a result of Adam Armstrong’s position? No, he doesn’t. He realizes that Cam Archer is a threat, so he really steps back from him. Is it an error if the goalie hasn’t moved if we are rejecting the goal because Adam Armstrong is obstructing or affecting him?
It passes behind Adam and he is unable to cross. I’m frustrated about that. In cold and tense situations, we wait in the stadium for four or five minutes. Due to the weight of the on-pitch judgment, that is then given.
