Burgess: Jota’s Squeal May Have Won Penalty
Burgess claims Sammie Szmodics argued he had no contact with the Portuguese winger, who hurled himself to the
ground to win the penalty kick as he passed the Irish international shortly after halftime.
Referee Tony Harrington pointed to the spot, and VAR confirmed the judgment before Chris Wood slammed the
penalty into the net.
“Szmods didn’t believe he’d caught him. I have not seen it. Burgess told BBC Sport, “He went down in a heap and
made a loud noise and squeal. They sometimes get given because of that.”
“We demonstrated our fitness by playing till the very end. It’s all about improvement and hard effort. I believe we
can continue in our current direction and improve.”
