Sky Soprts Kieran McKenna breaks silence on Aston Villa interest in Ipswich Town talisman.
The Villans are said to be sniffing around the star of Ipswich’s Premier League campaign so far.
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna has replied to suggestions that Aston Villa and other Premier League teams are interested in one of his top players following a strong start to the season.
Liam Delap, who joined the Tractor Boys permanently from Manchester City in the summer, has already scored six goals and provided one assist in the Premier League this season. During a 2-2 draw at Portman Road, the striker scored twice against Unai Emery’s team.
The Villans, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle, and Chelsea, as well as former club Manchester City, are reportedly interested in the 21-year-old striker’s services after only a few months in East Anglia. A buy-back clause may also be available.
McKenna has been compelled to reply to such allegations as Delap continues to perform: “I know we have no interest in selling Liam, and Liam has no interest in going anywhere else at the moment; he wants to keep focussing on his performance and game, as well as improving and helping the team here.” That’s where everyone’s attention is.
Last season, the Ipswich No.19 shared victory with Villa winger Jaden Philogene at Hull City. Philogene was a permanent move when Delap was on loan at the Tigers, but he returned to Villa Park a season later since the Lions held matching rights on the 22-year-old winger.
A similar agreement might be in place between Delap and Manchester City, depriving Emery the opportunity to rejoin the England U21 international with his old Hull teammate.
When questioned about a prospective buy-back provision, the Ipswich manager said, “No, I have not asked [chairman and CEO] Mark [Ashton] about it.”
“To be honest, I’m not aware of or interested in a buyback provision.
“I know Liam’s complete concentration is here and on the squad, and he’s trying to assist the team while also working on himself. He’s had a solid start to the season, which is encouraging.”
