Middlesbrough are keen on signing Louie Barry on loan as Aston Villa are planning to recall the winger from Stockport County, BirminghamWorld can exclusively reveal.
Villa, thrilled by Barry’s outstanding performance this season, believe the attacker has outgrown League One and would be better suited to a loan in the Championship.
Barry has 13 goals in 17 League One appearances since the start of the 2024/25 season, building on his nine goals in 20 League Two games the previous season. This is the 21-year-old’s second season at Stockport, having helped the Hatters win the fourth-tier title in 2023/24.
Barry has already piqued the interest of Championship clubs, with Middlesbrough reportedly keeping an eye on the winger in case of recall. The Villans cannot terminate Barry’s loan until the January transfer window, and the decision has not yet been finalized, so the current idea is to observe how he performs in the English second division instead.
It is also reported that Villa will grant Barry another contract extension despite having renewed terms in August and the previous summer. Although there are no plans for Barry to play regular first-team football at Villa Park just yet, it is anticipated that he will continue his development and one day make a real breakthrough.
Barry, a former member of Barcelona’s La Masia academy, has always had the talent to succeed; it has simply taken him a bit longer than expected to establish his footing. The former West Bromwich Albion youth has steadily improved in recent years, thanks to loan spells at Ipswich Town, Swindon Town, MK Dons, Salford City, and now Stockport.
Barry, primarily a left winger but also capable of playing center forward or off the right, has been an excellent loan player for Stockport. They say never fall in love with a loan player, but it’s been extremely tough for Edgeley Park fans not to. Hatters fans will be disappointed if Villa stick to their plan and Barry leaves.
