Brighton and Southampton managers square up as tempers boil over ‘lack of respect
Brighton and Southampton played out a hot-tempered 1-1 draw on Friday night
After a heated, contentious 1-1 draw at the Amex Stadium, Southampton manager Russell Martin and Brighton
manager Fabian Hurzeler faced off.
Following a game in which Saints were denied a valuable victory by a VAR decision in the second half, both
managers accused one another of lacking respect.
Cameron Archer had just scored following a cross from Ryan Fraser, a Saints substitute, to cancel out Kaoru
Mitoma’s opening goal.
After more than four minutes of play, it was determined that Archer was onside. Adam Armstrong, who was offside
but did not touch the ball, was then given a penalty for interfering with play.
The official explanation was that Armstrong was in an offside position and “deemed to be impacting” Brighton
goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen’s ability to play the ball.
Both benches swore at one another when Brighton’s Simon Adingra struck a post during the 13 minutes of extra time.
Both managers received bookings throughout the game: Martin for his response to further protests from the
Brighton manager following a foul by Downes, who was on a yellow card and most likely fortunate to still be on the
field, and Hurzeler for waving an imaginary yellow card in the first half.
Hurzeler remarked, “I said precisely that at halftime.” Then he commits another infraction.
There is no explanation, and it changes the game. However, when speaking in England, you need to be very careful. I
don’t understand my yellow card.
“For me, it’s just important to have respect,” the German said when pressed about his confrontation with Martin
following the final whistle. Respecting one another and your communication style is crucial. That is how I received
my education.
The theatrics of his opposite number on the touchline obviously did not impress Martin.
“The manager made the decision to make a statement regarding respect,” he stated. “I’ve never seen a manager
attempt to book that many players.” Respect is given and received. It is reciprocal.
“As for the decision late on, I respect how difficult the decision is for the referee and the assistant referee. It is really
difficult, but I find it hard to accept.
“The on-pitch choice is significant and is likely to be documented as the right one. But in my view, it was a poor
choice because Adam has no influence over the goalie.
A brilliant diving header from Mitoma, which eventually helped Brighton move up to second place, level on points,
goal differential, and goals scored with Manchester City, was overshadowed by the dispute.
After Armstrong’s two attempts were blocked, Tyler Dibling, an outstanding teenager, scored a wonderful goal from
the edge of the area to give Downes the lead early in the second half.
However, Saints are still at the bottom of the standings and might be seven points clear of relegation by Saturday night.
