Why Saints will still get midfield boost with top draft picks

Why Saints will still get midfield boost with top draft picks.

Draft analyst Cal Twomey feels St Kilda’s midfield assets will still be strengthened at the draft, even if they miss out on the absolute best players.

ST KILDA supporters may rest comfortable knowing that a midfield boost is on the way on Wednesday.

Cal Twomey’s Phantom Draft revealed running machine Tobie Travaglia and versatile tall Alix Tauru as top-10 choices, disappointing many Saints supporters.

Saints supporters were shocked at the idea of their team passing up the opportunity to sign one or two top frontline midfielders in what has long been considered as an extraordinary draft.

However, Twomey believes the club’s midfield will be strengthened during the draft, even if they do not land the best players.

On Tuesday’s Gettable Draft Countdown, Twomey stated that the Saints’ midfielders are not among the top options in this year’s draft.

“And I believe Tobie Travaglia can and will become a midfielder in time. That, I believe, is quite within his prospects. Worst-case scenario, he’s a 200-game halfback or wingback who is a decent player.

“And Tauru, while he is not now a midfield option, he may become one in the future. He’s the ‘could be anything’ player in this year’s draft.

“What number did Charlie Curnow have in his draft, around here?” There are some parallels between their possibilities and power, especially in the air.

Phantom Draft is unpacked, and there are lots of guests on Gettable Draft Countdown, Day Two.

Riley Beveridge and Cal Twomey are accompanied by Mark Kleiman, Tom Gross, John Meesen, Joe Berry, Adam Kingsley, Mick Agresta, Murphy Reid, Taj Hotton, and Andrew McQualter.

Twomey anticipates that Sam Lalor, Finn O’Sullivan, Jagga Smith, Sid Draper, Harvey Langford, and Josh Smillie will not be available for the Saints’ first pick.

That might change, however, if Adelaide chooses Langford as its No.4 choice over local star Draper. Twomey suggests that if Draper is passed over by Melbourne and Richmond, he might end up with the Saints. They could then select Travaglia, Xavier Lindsey, or Joe Berry as their second selection.

And with their third selection, which is now pick 32, Twomey believes a solid midfield option will still be available.
