Tottenham squandered a crucial Europa League victory by allowing a last-minute goal to draw 2-2 at home to Roma.

The hosts were given a penalty inside four minutes after Pape Matar Sarr was clattered by Mats Hummels, a judgement that came only after a long VAR review. Son Heung-min stepped up and sent custodian Mile Svilar the wrong way, giving Tottenham an early advantage.

Midway through the first half, Roma equalised when Paulo Dybala’s free-kick from the left channel was met by Evan N’Dicka’s head, which thundered in off the underside of the crossbar. Seconds later, the visitors believed they had taken the lead when Stephan El Shaarawy volleyed home following a wonderful dink over the Spurs defenders, but VAR ruled it out for offside.

An epic goalmouth scramble saw Svilar and wing-back Angelino save close-range shots from Brennan Johnson and Dominic Solanke. Shortly after, the Welshman put his team back ahead by sweeping in from a Dejan Kulusevski cut-back.

Kulusevski could have scored Tottenham’s third shortly after, but he struck the post, and Son blazed over the rebound from eight yards out.

Artem Dovbyk scored twice for Roma at the opening of the second half, but both times he was offside, and the celebrations in the away end were cut short. Angelino then hit the crossbar with a half-volley, while compatriot Pedro Porro did the same from a free-kick, and a Solanke header rebounded back against the woodwork.

Porro nearly gave Roma a late opening with a delicate header back towards Fraser Forster, but the custodian was quick to clear the threat. In extra time, Forster was called upon to block a determined Gianluca Mancini attempt.

However, Tottenham’s resistance was overcome by Hummels, who stabbed home at the far post on the second ball to salvage a point and send the travelling fans berserk.
