This week, Celtic participated in Champions League play.
If Celtic makes it to the Champions League play-offs, they would most likely face either PSV or Benfica. In their most recent match of the season, they drew 1-1 with Club Brugge on Wednesday evening.
They were under 1-0 going into halftime after defender Cameron Carter-Vickers scored an own goal in the first half. The score remained that way when the Hoops rallied in the second half and equalized through forward Daizen Maeda.
They now have three games remaining to play in the Champions League against Dynamo Zagreb, Young Boys and Aston Villa. Celtic are sat in 20th place out of 36 clubs in the standings. As per Football Meets Data on X, here is who they are likely to face if they make the play-offs…
Most likely UCL KO play-off pairings (as of 28 Nov): 6.0% Brest – Real Madrid 5.8% Lille – Feyenoord 5.7% Benfica – Juventus 5.6% Celtic – PSV 5.6% Monaco – Benfica 5.5% Brest – PSV 5.5% Celtic – Benfica
Celtic are still on track and haven’t done too terribly in Europe this season. In the Scottish Premiership, they lead Aberdeen by two points. The Hoops return to action this weekend at home against Ross County, looking to maintain their unbeaten streak.
Rodgers’ players have shown to be a difficult nut to crack, and they will look to move away from the Dons in second and the disappointing Rangers in third.
‘Slightly disappointed’… After their tie with Club Brugge, former manager Neil Lennon commented, “I have to say I’m a little disappointed with the performance.” I think Brugge at times looked the far superior team and it was a bit of individual brilliance from Maeda to pull the goal back.
“Then Celtic huffed and puffed, but I don’t recall Mignolet having to make too many fantastic stops, although at the other end of the pitch, they had a goal disallowed, Schmiechel made a great save just after half-time, and the young Olsen missed a volley at the far post. He should’ve scored.
