Carter-Vickers mistakenly put the ball in his own net due to a miscommunication with custodian Kasper Schmeichel.

Cameron Carter-Vickers got the ball at the top of the box and, after being put under pressure, passed it back towards his goal, expecting Kasper Schmeichel to be there, but the Danish custodian was nowhere to be found, and the ball went into his own net.

The mistake resulted in Brugge’s opener, leaving Carter-Vickers reeling from the cruel own-goal.

Carter-Vickers has 18 USMNT caps and was a member of Gregg Berhalter’s 2022 FIFA World Cup team. However, he is yet to play under Mauricio Pochettino, having missed Argentina’s October and November training camps. He was, however, on the 2024 Copa America team, playing 45 minutes in their historic 2-1 loss to Panama in the Group Stage, which eliminated them from the competition.
