The massive overlooked co-efficient benefit of Celtic’s Champions League run

The winners of the 24/25 SPFL title will have to go through two rounds of qualifying the following season, which will be determined by Scotland’s coefficient, after three seasons of direct entry into the Champions League.

Aberdeen would certainly be unseeded at that point, but Celtic’s performance this season appears to be pushing them into one of the seeded spots in the Third Round and the Play Off round. The club coefficient then determines where you are in the draw.

The four seeded teams in the Play Off stage this season were Dinamo Zagreb, Red Star Belgrade, YB Berne, and Galatasaray; all but Galatasaray advanced to the group round.

Although it is now hard to determine which of the countries that do not automatically qualify would win the crowns, Galatasaray was seeded with a coefficient of 31.5, while Celtic is currently on 34 and could move up.

At this point, Brendan Rodgers is unlikely to give it much thought, but if the hoops win the championship, it would be nice to avoid the winners from countries like Croatia, Serbia, and Switzerland.
