Rangers vs Nice predicted line-up: Tavernier and Diomande start | Rangers Review

Rangers face Nice in the Europa League tonight.

Nice, the club’s first European opponents in 1956 during a chaotic triple-header, currently ranks behind Philippe Clement’s team in the league rankings.

Rangers’ 1-1 draw with Dundee United on Saturday added to the pressure on Clement.

Our authors estimate which squad the Belgian manager will choose tonight.

Chris Jack

It arguably sums up Rangers’ current dilemma that the two players who made a difference against Dundee United, Ianis Hagi and Danilo, are unavailable for the trip to Nice. As a result, Clement has limited options for injecting vitality into his front line.

The playmaker and No. 9 positions are currently a major concern. It might be rectified by moving Nedim Bajrami to the centre berth. Given the limited possibilities in the vast areas, Ross McCausland may return. He does, at least, have speed, something the Rangers desperately lack. Mohamed Diomande’s current form does not deserve a start.

The other major calls come from the back. Robin Propper and Dujon Sterling had surprising starts over the weekend. Sterling should hold his place, while Leon Balogun should take the second centre-back position. It might be a hectic night for both.

I have no doubt Rangers will achieve a solid outcome in France. Put it this way: if you gave Clement a game away at Nice or at home against Kilmarnock today, he’d probably choose the former given the disparity between Rangers’ European and domestic performances.

The team tonight will most likely not differ significantly in terms of strategy or players from the one that began against Dundee United, which speaks to part of the problem Clement is now facing.

James Tavernier will most likely keep his place at full-back, with Dujon Sterling likely to be preferred for the important games in December. This is a midfield battle that will favour Diomande, Raskin, and Barron.

There is limited room for alteration in the front three, with Hagi and Danilo missing the Europa League team. Again, the available space will likely suit Bajrami and Cerny, even if the Ibrox side’s assault lacks actual speed.
