“No other option” – Norwich City urged to take January transfer action if big-money Borja Sainz move happens

Sainz has been the best player in the Championship this season, and the Canaries are undoubtedly worried about his near future. The Spanish winger has been fully liberated since Johannes Hoff Thorup was hired in the summer after showing flashes of genuine promise during his debut season in English football last time out.

With 14 goals from 17 games and two assists for good measure, Sainz is still the division’s top scorer right now.

He is presently proving to be unstoppable for the Canaries after scoring three goals in Tuesday night’s 6-1 thumping of Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle at Carrow Road to record his second hat-trick of the season.

Norwich City’s Borja Sainz has earned transfer interest ahead of January

It should come as no surprise that Sainz is already the focus of a lot of transfer interest before the January window opens in a little more than a month.

Galatasaray, who signed Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Sara back in the summer, is reportedly interested in stealing a second star from Norfolk by pursuing Sainz.

Galatasaray may feel more confident of successfully relocating for another Norwich talent in Sainz when January rolls around because they were able to get the highly sought-after maestro, but they will likely face fierce competition for his services.

Atletico Madrid, Athletic Club, and Villarreal are all interested in acquiring Sainz, according to Radio Popular de Bilbao. Unsurprisingly, it is thought that Sainz would prefer to relocate to the Spanish capital, where Diego Simeone could provide the 23-year-old with UEFA Champions League action.

But it’s important to remember that Sainz is from the Basque Country, thus a move to Bilbao is also conceivable.

Although Sainz has plenty of suitors, Norwich has previously stated that they have no plans to let him depart. “We don’t need to sell Borja in January,” Canaries owner Mark Attanasio stated in a recent interview with The Pink Un. To be honest, we never need to sell them.

“As far as our athletes’ outcomes are concerned, we have control over what we can.

“It’s just at some point there’s an element of fairness, if I understand the ecosystem, where if you’re getting offered a very fair price, and it doesn’t have to be an extreme price, and it’s something that someone wants to do then you have to look at it.”

Norwich City urged to sign two replacements if Borja Sainz departs in January

In light of Sainz’s red-hot form, we asked our resident Canaries fan pundit, Zeke Downes, whether the Canaries will need to replace the Spaniard or if they can make do without his services.

Zeke believes that not just one replacement will do the trick, with Sainz’s astounding goalscoring output meaning that Norwich may well need to sign two new attacking players in order to attempt to offset his departure.

“If we did lose Sainz in the January window then we have no other option but to get a replacement,” Zeke told Football League World.

One player is probably not going to be able to replace that kind of output.

“It would have to be two, which is another reason why I don’t see how or why they would allow him to leave unless it was for a significant sum of money. Without him and without [Josh] Sargent, we have no chance of finishing in the top six at this stage of the season.

“So there’s no way we would be able to cope without him and we would have to have two, not just the one signing, in order to replace him.”
