Protests occurred after six people were arrested by counter-terrorism officials in Haringey, with four more detained on suspicion of supporting a proscribed group, assaulting an emergency worker, making threats to kill, and committing a racially aggravated public order offence.
According to a video uploaded on social media, police battled with irate protestors in London following a string of arrests by counter-terrorism officials. The clip, shared by GB News’ Darren Grimes, appears to show officers confronted by a huge group of individuals, their voices rising. At one time, a voice is heard stating, “You’re going to kill him.” A helicopter can be heard overhead.
Six people have been arrested, and a Kurdish community facility will be closed for up to two weeks while it is searched as part of a counterterrorism investigation into the illegal Kurdistan Workers Party.
The group, known as the PKK, is classified as a terrorist organisation in the United Kingdom, and the arrests occurred during a “significant” police investigation into potential terrorist activity. Four men, ages 23, 27, 56, and 62, and two women, ages 31 and 59, were seized at separate residences in London during dawn searches and are still in jail, according to the Metropolitan Police.
A Met Police spokesperson said: “Earlier today, a number of protestors assembled near the Kurdish Community Centre in Portland Gardens, Haringey, following the arrest of six persons this morning on suspicion of PKK-related terrorism offences. “Officers continue to carry out related search activity at the community centre, which remains closed to the public.”
“We acknowledge the impact that this action has had on people in the community, and we will work hard to provide assistance alongside our partners.
“Local officers will continue to have a presence in the area over the coming days and we’d urge the public to speak to them if they have continuing concerns.” Searches are underway at eight sites, including the Kurdish Community Centre in Haringey, north London, where the police indicated the operation might last up to two weeks.
Acting Commander Helen Flanagan of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command stated: “This conduct resulted from a large investigation and operation into activities we believe is linked to the terrorist group PKK.
“These are targeted arrests of individuals suspected of being involved in terrorist action associated to the group.”I hope that these arrests demonstrate that we will not tolerate any form of terrorist activity and will take action if we believe there is harm being done to communities in the UK or elsewhere.”
The PKK is a separatist party that seeks an independent Kurdish state in south-east Turkey. It has been banned in the UK since 2001. It has been fighting the Turkish government since the early 1980s. Mr.
Grimes made this statement: “Protests kick off in London after 6 have been arrested by Counter Terror Police.” Ishak Milani of the Kurdish People’s Assembly in the UK said: “We, the Kurdish community in London, firmly condemn the recent unjust and heavy-handed raid by British police on our community places.
