Michael Carrick’s insight into Middlesbrough team selection planning in a three-game week
This evening’s match between Boro and Blackburn Rovers takes place within a three-game week, and Carrick talks about his philosophy behind team selection.
Boro hosts Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday night, and Michael Carrick has shared his thoughts on how he chooses
his team for a three-game week like this one.
The Boro boss is clearly aware that team selection and player safety from fatigue-related issues are under increased
scrutiny, especially in light of last season’s injury problems. Selection selections have clearly been taken with it in
mind throughout the season, especially while playing three-game weeks.
Boro had previously visited Oxford United this week, and following an exciting 6-2 triumph, they returned to
Teesside with three points. They will be looking to increase their winning streak to five games in order to bolster
their promotion credentials in their upcoming Riverside doubleheader against Blackburn and Hull.

Asked how he plans the week as far as picking his Boro team is concerned though, he explained: “We try to plan the
week ahead with all three games in mind, but you never know what will be thrown up at you. There’s certainly an
idea of what the three games might look like – which players might be suited to certain games, who we’re playing
against and how that works in a three-game week.
It’s exactly why Boro made sure to assemble a strong squad this summer. Carrick is blessed with options across every
position in his squad, and encouragingly in this good moment for Boro, almost all of them appear to be playing
themselves into good form.
The boys have been excellent throughout. Some have played more than others, and there is disappointment and
frustration, but they have used it in the right way. You have to be ready because you never know when that next game
comes. You have to be ready, and the boys have done that tremendously. “Probably the consistency, really, whoever
has played is really pleasing and, for me, I definitely don’t take that for granted or lightly in terms of the importance
of that.”
