Red Bull denies Max Verstappen a £13 million compensation after slashing his title bonus.
The Dutchman won the Las Vegas Grand Prix for the fourth consecutive season, finishing ahead of Lando Norris. It propelled him 62 points ahead of his McLaren adversary in the standings, with only 60 available before the chequered flag in Abu Dhabi.
Despite maintaining his title comfortably, Verstappen will be paid less than he was last season because to his lower win %, according to Fox Sports Mexico.
The 27-year-old won 19 races last year but has only won eight this year, with the advent of McLaren and Ferrari as regular challengers preventing Red Bull from winning as frequently as they would like.
Verstappen is expected to receive £4.1 million as a reward for winning the championship, as well as £10 million for his eight Grand Prix victories at a cost of £1.25 million each. As a result, he will receive approximately £13 million less than he received in bonuses at the end of last season.
Meanwhile, all Red Bull staff will have their bonuses reduced if they finish third in the Constructors’ Championship rankings. This would be largely due to Sergio Perez, who has battled to keep pace with Verstappen throughout the season.
The latter will be hoping to earn a larger prize next season, having expressed his intention to capture a fifth consecutive title immediately after winning his fourth in Las Vegas last weekend.
“I’m hungry,” Verstappen explained. “Of course, I’m going to enjoy it, but I also want to do well in two other races. And then, of course, we take a little rest before trying again the following year.
Christian Horner, on the other hand, believes Verstappen is one of the greatest drivers of all time, ranking him with Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton.
“He has an insane amount of natural talent and ability,” the Red Bull team principal stated. “He is the most hungry driver I have ever seen.
“The devotion, application, and self-belief have resulted in one of the most remarkable drivers I’ve ever seen. To be standing here with Max for the fourth time in a row and joining a very special club of champions places him among the all-time greats.”
