‘Get out that club’—6′ times footballers’ parents have hugely embarrassed their sons
Over the weekend, Fabio Carvalho experienced some humiliation as his father used social media to tell the former Liverpool prospect to leave Brentford after being benched at Everton.
Who’d have them, parents?
Or, in the instance of Fabio Carvalho, who would post them on social media? The Brentford star’s weekend became much worse when his father, Victor, publicly aired his rage on Instagram when he was not used as a substitute in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Everton.
A comment from Carvalho senior on a post from Brentford’s official account read, “Son, you need to get out that club.” Remember that the 22-year-old only moved from Liverpool to the Bees in August.
Cue the screenshots littered across social media which will’ve made for an awkward Monday morning at the club’s training ground. But it’s not the first time parents have subjected their sons to embarrassment.
Here are six examples from down the years.
1. Aaron Ramsdale’s dad slams Arsenal treatment
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta’s decision to bench Aaron Ramsdale in favour of new recruit David Raya set off one of the most significant Premier League kickoffs in history and generated weeks of discussion. Was that the right choice? In terms of statistics, yes. Was it just? Perhaps there will never be a solution to that.
His father made an appearance on the Highbury Squad podcast two months after Ramsdale was initially benched for the Gunners’ September 2023 trip to Everton. “Ramsdale was going to be dropped, but we had no idea. “I had no idea, neither did our family, and Aaron had no idea that he was going to stop playing,” dad Nick disclosed.
“The way it’s been done, in my eyes, it’s been wrong,” he stated. “Aaron was defeated.”
Ramsdale spent the rest of the season as Raya’s understudy but decided to leave the Emirates after three years by joining Southampton for £25million. The Saints are currently rock bottom of the league table.
2. Paul Konchesky’s mum blasts ‘Scouse scum’
Step one of how not to endear yourselves to supporters of a football club on Merseyside: don’t have your mum call them ‘Scouse scum’ on social media. Yes, that really did happen to former Liverpool left-back Paul Konchesky.
After Roy Hodgson got the gig at Anfield, Konchesky followed him from Fulham in another ill-fated move. Following a dire 2-0 defeat away to Stoke City in November 2010, his mum accused fans of ‘living in the past’ and suggested that her son ‘should never have left Fulham’.
Speaking on speaking on Sky Sports’ Fantasy Football Club seven years later, Konchesky addressed the issue by saying: “She was obviously naive thinking that it would stay between her and her friends. She probably regrets every single bit of it now, but that’s motherhood for you!
“I didn’t know about it until probably a day or two after it. I went into training and obviously the press people get hold of you and say blah, blah, blah. She regrets every minute of it, but that’s life. You get on and you learn from your mistakes. I’ve gone on and played many more games since.”
3. Erling Haaland’s dad vs Real Madrid fans
Erling Haaland hasn’t had many embarrassing moments since joining Manchester City in 2022, but his father’s actions during their away first leg in the Champions League semifinal against Real Madrid won’t be a pleasant memory. After making fun of the home crowd, Alf-Inge, a former City player, was clumsily taken out of his box at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Norwegian was spotted grinning and holding his ears as he got ready to be removed by Real Madrid personnel. Following the 1-1 tie which eventually helped City reach the final, Alf-Inge explained: “Ok. The celebration of KDB’s [Kevin De Bruyne’s] goal did not sit well with RM [Real Madrid]. Aside from that, we had to relocate since RM fans were unhappy with the 1-1.
When he was accused of throwing peanuts at Los Blancos fans, Alf-Inge added: “Ok. I did not. Not true. We had some good banter with Madrid fans. They were not happy when City scored. Typical. Then we had to move 50 meters away. Nothing more. All happy. Well nearly…”
Nothing was stopping he and Erling from celebrating in Istanbul a few weeks later.
4. Adrien Rabiot’s mum several times
During the transfer window, has the mother of a football player ever mentioned as frequently as Veronique Rabiot? Veronique’s influence may be traced back to Adrien Rabiot’s early years at Paris Saint-Germain.
The talented midfielder received an invitation to travel to Qatar with the PSG young team two years after joining the team. But Rabiot would never travel, since the club reportedly refused to let his mum join him.
She then labelled her son a ‘prisoner’ at PSG, since he’d been locked out of the squad under Thomas Tuchel after entering the final months of his contract in 2019. Veronique asserted, “He is even held hostage by PSG,” just before she assisted in arranging for him to relocate to Julius.
“Soon it will be dry bread, water, and a dungeon! This environment is cruel. They want him to put on his pyjamas at nine o’clock, before the game, in front of his TV, to go to bed at 11 o’clock!”
Adrien Rabiot’s mother, Veronique, has been instrumental in directing his career.
And the turmoil isn’t limited to the club level. Following France’s elimination from Euro 2020 in the round of 16 against Switzerland, video captured Veronique having tense conversations with Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe’s family in the stands.
“Rabiot’s mother is known to be very sensitive and very close to her son and she didn’t appreciate what Pogba’s friends were saying about one of Adrien’s touches,” the Athletic was informed by a source.
“So she blamed Pogba for the loss of the ball in midfield (leading to Switzerland’s equalising goal in extra-time). Then she went to Mbappe’s father, ‘You better take care of your son because he has a big head and too much protection from the press and I think he’s arrogant’. So it’s a mess and she is well known for that at Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus.

6. Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ mum arrested
Finally, but just as importantly, we’re back at Arsenal. This time, though, a player—in this case, Ainsley Maitland-Niles—was severely embarrassed by more than just words.
After Maitland-Niles’ mother allegedly assaulted Dick Law, the club’s top negotiator, and her son’s agent, Arsenal took action to ban her in March 2015. Jule Niles was brought into custody by police after they were called to Arsenal’s London Colney training facility, but officials did not take any further action.
In 2015, Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ mother was detained and prohibited from using Arsenal’s training facility
Police were summoned to the scene at 4:11 p.m. on March 20 after receiving complaints that a woman had reportedly assaulted two persons, according to a Hertfordshire police spokesperson. Their wounds were minor. When police arrived, a Watford woman, 36, was taken into custody on suspicion of assault.
Since then, no further action has been taken against her, and she has been released. Police were called to the location on Friday, April 24 at 2:40pm to reports a woman was refusing to leave the premises. When officers arrived, they gave the woman a warning.
That situation marred Maitland-Niles’ debut season and now aged 27, he plays for Lyon in France.
