Liverpool get fresh Southampton red card verdict as Adam Lallana decision reviewed

Following claims that the former Liverpool midfielder should have seen red, opinions on Adam Lallana’s tackle on

Ryan Gravenberch have been divided.

According to former Premier League referee Jeff Winter, Adam Lallana, a former midfielder for Liverpool, shouldn’t

have been sent out for a challenge on Ryan Gravenberch. Halfway through the first half of the Reds’ 3-2 victory over

Southampton, the 36-year-old was booked for a reckless challenge on the Dutchman.

As they fought for a loose ball in the Saints half, Lallana, who had played for Anfield for six years, made a full-

blooded tackle on Gravenberch. The 22-year-old fell down in a heap, and the Liverpool players did not protest much.

Since Samuel Barrott only showed a yellow card, Roy Keane implied that Lallana was able to get away with the

challenge because of his lack of a reputation for hard-tackling. Lallana was lucky not to receive a red card during

Sunday’s match against his old club, according to Sue Smith and former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher.

However, Winter, who has refereed over 250 professional games, including 185 in the Premier League, disagreed and

acknowledged in his analysis of the situation that the right call was a yellow.

“There were plenty of other moments in that game,” he said to Grosvenor Casino. Consider Adam Lallana’s tackle,

for instance. I believe that the decision to give him a yellow card was the right one.

“He did make a low jump at the opponent, but it didn’t put the player in risk. I believe people occasionally forget that

not every foul calls for a card, either red or yellow.

“There has been a trend this season to assume that every challenge would result in a card. There would be games like

the ones we’ve seen with 16 yellow cards if referees sent out cards for each infraction.

And it’s practically a given that someone will commit a second offense and be sent off if you’ve set such a low bar.

There is a narrow line to walk.
