BBC Sports Former Leeds United striker slams Rangers boss over Dessers early substitution against Dundee United.
McCormack has questioned Rangers manager Philipe Clement’s decision to substitute Cyriel Dessers at halftime during their 1-1 draw with Dundee United at the Ibrox Stadium. The home team trailed at halftime after Sam Dalby’s score in the 36th minute, prompting Clement to replace Dessers with Brazilian attacker Danilo. Danilo justified his substitution by assisting Václav Černý for the equaliser in the 66th minute, securing a point for the Light Blues.
Dessers had a quiet afternoon, with only one shot blocked, eight touches, three passes, and four turnovers. Rangers needed an equaliser, but Clement couldn’t be patient with the Nigerian striker and had to replace him at the conclusion of the first 45 minutes.
McCormack was dissatisfied with the Rangers manager’s decision to remove the veteran attacker, claiming that his recent performances were adequate to keep him in the game and not hiding his amazement that he is still in command of the Scottish giants.
“Listen, nothing surprises you in football, but if they were going to do it, they should have done it before the international break. “I think by all accounts, it hasn’t happened yet, but I think it may be delaying the inevitable,” he told the BBC’s Scottish Football Podcast through footballscotlandhttp://sportupdates.co.uk
. “Most Rangers fans would have been pleased with the news [if Clement was fired]. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong time to do it; I simply look at what’s going on at Ibrox right now and I’m not very comfortable with it.
“Look at the game over the weekend, when he takes Dessers out at halftime. Is that truly deserving? He helped them regain their footing in the Europa League semi-finals against Olympiacos… I believe a lot is going on at Ibrox right now. Sometimes you can see the tide turn; maybe they get a performance or a result. But nothing seemed to be going well. Clement is under intense criticism because his team is far behind table-toppers Celtic, and he may lose his job shortly if form does not improve.
The Scottish League Cup is the Light Blues’ sole hope of collecting silverware right now, as they have advanced to the final, where they will face Celtic on 15 December at Hampden Park.
