Manchester United news as the Premier League address the VAR outage during the 1-1 draw against Ipswich Town
Following the last international window of 2024, Premier League football returned this past weekend, but not without VAR turbulence.
In the first game under new manager Ruben Amorim, Manchester United drew 1-1 away against Ipswich Town on Sunday night.Omari Hutchinson scored an incredible goal just before halftime to offset Marcus Rashford’s initial goal within the first few minutes.
Although there were no particularly contentious referee or VAR calls made throughout the match, the Premier League Match Centre was compelled to declare before the interval that the technology had been turned off for an unusual reason. Anthony Taylor drew the two captains aside to let them know that Stockley Park’s fire alarm was the reason VAR wasn’t working.
Once it was announced that the match will not be used VAR till further notice, confirmation was posted on social media platform X (previously Twitter).
Thankfully, there were no situations that needed VAR’s involvement, and the halftime whistle blew soon after. However, after such a good start, United was disappointed that their early advantage had been lost.
The Premier League issued a second statement prior to the start of the second half at Portman Road, clarifying that VAR was operational again following the incident. Despite using the available technologies for the full second half, neither team was able to get a much-needed winner.
After 12 games, United is still 12th in the league rankings, 15 points behind leaders Liverpool. As of right now, they are six behind Arsenal and seven behind Manchester City.
When Amorim’s team plays Norwegian team FK Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League midweek, he will be hoping for the first victory of his tenure. They play Everton in the league at Old Trafford the following weekend.
