Alabama plummets in coaches, AP poll top 25 rankings after Oklahoma loss

Alabama football’s College Football Playoff dreams were likely crushed on Saturday, when it lost 24-3 at Oklahoma for its third defeat of the season. On Sunday, the latest coaches top 25 poll update added insult to injury.

The Crimson Tide had been ranked No. 7 in the coaches and AP media polls entering Saturday’s game. With the new update, it dropped to No. 13 in both the AP and coaches’ rankings.

Kalen DeBoer’s team simply never got going against the Sooners in Norman on Sunday. Facing a team that entered the game with but one SEC victory all season, UA quarterback Jalen Milroe rushed for just seven yards, and Brent Venables’ defense held the Tide to only a field goal.

Meanwhile, the Alabama defense couldn’t stop the run. Quarterback Jackson Arnold, who had been pulled earlier this season for his backup, led the way for the Sooners, rushing for 131 yards.

Alabama had controlled its own path to the SEC championship game before facing Oklahoma. When Missouri beat Mississippi State earlier in the day, it meant all UA had to do for a spot in Atlanta was win out.

Instead, the Crimson Tide will have to watch a team it beat playing in the game. Georgia clinched a spot, and will play the winner of Texas and Texas A&M for the league title.

Meanwhile, Alabama will now be looking to figure out its bowl fate in the coming weeks. The CFP rankings will be released Tuesday, and will almost certainly show that UA is virtually eliminated from contention in the 12-team field, barring some sort of miracle series of results.

The Crimson Tide will be back in action on Saturday, when Auburn travels to Tuscaloosa for the Iron Bowl. The Tigers will be playing for bowl eligibility.
