Stoke City have one of the marksmen towards the top end of the Championship’s goalscorers list – but Narcis Pelach believes Tom Cannon can finish at the summit
Narcis Pelach believes Stoke City could have the Championship’s top goalscorer in Tom Cannon if he continues his excellent run of form in front of goal. Cannon, borrowed from Leicester City for the season, scored a wonderful goal in the 1-1 draw at Queens Park Rangers on Saturday.
The forward’s quadruple on a spectacular evening against Portsmouth puts him on eight goals for the season, all of which have come in his previous ten games. That was his fourth goal in five games. With seven of those goals coming in the league, Cannon is tied for third place in the Championship standings with Vakoun Bayo, Emmanuel Latte Lath, and Haji Wright.
Josh Maja, a former Stoke City loanee, has scored 10 goals for West Bromwich Albion this season, and Norwich City’s Borja Sainz leads that group of strikers with 11. In fact, Sainz and Maja both scored during Saturday’s match between the Baggies and the Canaries at The Hawthorns.
Given that the young striker has already shown growth and a responsiveness to the demands made by his new manager, Pelach sees no reason why Cannon cannot be at the top of the list by the end of the season.
Pelach responded, “I have no doubts about that,” when asked if he could end as the top scorer. “When I first arrived, I told him I had high expectations. Naturally, I desired more than fifteen. I have great expectations of him, but we’ll see if he meets them or not. Hopefully, he will be able to handle it, remain resilient, get through the difficult times, and get the desired results.
“I have a lot of faith in both Tom Cannon and my players. Even though he has a lot of room for improvement in both areas, I’ve seen two Toms since coming here. I give him a lot of criticism, but he takes it well and wants to get better and move forward.
I’m expecting a lot more from him. He can score a lot more goals, in my opinion, but more importantly, he’s pushing effectively, defending well, and getting better at set pieces. He can do it because he wants to, and we are assisting him in getting there step by step.”
