The Stockport County winger is scoring for fun in League One and it’s turned the heads of Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City.
Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City are expected to turn down Stockport County star Louie Barry, despite Premier League clubs showing an interest in the 21-year-old.
Barry is on the books of Aston Villa, but he returned to Stockport County for another season-long loan this year after a successful 2023/24 season with the Hatters. The winger scored nine goals and four assists when the team was promoted from League Two last year and is in excellent form this season, with 11 goals in 16 League One appearances.
According to Spanish website Fichajes, his form has not gone unnoticed, with Tottenham Hotspur and Leicester City identified as top suitors to sign him from Aston Villa.
According to the source, a £12.5 million sum could be enough for the Villains to sell the youthful prodigy, who has just made one first-team appearance for the Midlands club. That came in a 4-1 FA Cup defeat to Liverpool in 2021, though Barry did score.
However, speaking to Football League World, former England player and EFL analyst Carlton Palmer believes Barry will turn down any interest from Spurs and the Foxes, even if it means moving up to the top division.
Louie Barry is ‘top quality player’
He said: “There has been a lot of talk about Louie Barry during his time at Stockport. He’s been excellent for them; he suffered an injury that sidelined him for a spell, but he’s looked fantastic. He’s an excellent player who knows how to find the back of the goal. Tottenham and Leicester City are reportedly interested in Barry, but Aston Villa has previously recalled players and may do so again to sell him.
“Obviously, he’s a big talent who scores goals. Of course, Stockport County is concerned, but the player also has a say in the matter. The player was adamant he wanted to return to Stockport County, where he had enjoyed himself under Dave Challinor.
“They’ve given him two promotions and are considering a third, and he’s done an excellent job. So he too has a say in what happens. So, I don’t think Barry would, certainly if you had the opportunity to move to Tottenham or Leicester City…Leicester will have to put everything on the line to stay in the Premier League, but they are a step above Stockport.
“But with Dave Challinor’s current performance, they could be promoted again. That environment, that feel-good aspect, is what football is all about, since that is when you play your best.
“We’ll have to see. Obviously, the more Barry continues to score goals and play the way he does, the more people will be interested in his services.”
