Liverpool returns to Premier League action this weekend and Manchester City could have narrowed the deficit at the top to only two points by the time the Reds kick off at Southampton.
With Real Madrid and Pep Guardiola’s team coming up soon, Arne Slot’s team has a busy week ahead of them. However, they must first get through the trip to the south coast.Although Liverpool has won 15 of the 17 games Slot has managed so far, they must increase that total before a pivotal time in the season.
By the time the Reds play, Manchester City will have played Spurs while Arsenal will have played in-form Nottingham Forest. The Gunners went into the weekend nine points behind top spot.
For the Liverpool game, Southampton will be missing several players including goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu, who is out with a long-term injury. Another shot-stopper, Aaron Ramsdale, is set to miss the next few weeks after having an operation on his hand.
Defender Jan Bednarek has a knee injury picked up during the international break and while it isn’t as bad as first feared, it will keep him out of the next couple of fixtures. He will be a big loss having been a regular this season.
In other news, Flynn Downes will have a late fitness test, Will Smallbone has a thigh ailment, and Ross Stewart is currently dealing with a calf issue. That means that five players are unquestionably absent, and there’s a chance that one more will be as well.
Harvey Elliott is once again available for the Reds to select in a significant slot increase.Trent Alexander-Arnold, Federico Chiesa, Diogo Jota, and Alisson Becker are all anticipated to be absent but return in the coming weeks.
