On Thursday, Carey Dale Grayson was killed with nitrogen gas for the 1994 murder of Vickie Deblieux, who was hitch-hiking to her mother’s home.
An nasty Death Row murderer said seven terrible final words before being gassed to death using a controversial execution procedure Friday night.
Carey Dale Grayson, condemned for the savage 1994 murder of hitch-hiker Vickie Deblieux, became the third person to be killed with nitrogen gas on Thursday.
Vickie Deblieux, 37, was hitch-hiking from Tennessee to her mother’s home in Louisiana when four people picked her up and drove her to a remote woods location. They viciously attacked her, beating her and threw her off a cliff.
The execution occurred at the state penitentiary in Atmore, a small city bordering Florida about 50 miles north of Pensacola.
On Thursday, at roughly 6.06pm local time, the death chamber curtain opened. After reading the death warrant, the prison warden held the microphone up to Grayson’s face and asked if he had any final remarks.
Grayson responded, “For you, you need to f*** off.” After Grayson reacted with an obscenity, the warden quickly removed the microphone and raised both of his middle fingers at him.
He was then made to choke on an inflow of atmospheric gas delivered to him through a mask while strapped to a gurney, according to the Mirror US.
Grayson was pronounced deceased at 6.33 p.m. Alabama began using nitrogen gas for some executions earlier this year. The method is placing a respirator gas mask over the person’s face to replace breathable air with pure nitrogen gas, resulting in death from a lack of oxygen.
The execution was carried out hours after the US Supreme Court denied Grayson’s appeal for a stay. His solicitors had argued that the procedure required greater study before being employed again.
Deblieux’s disfigured body was discovered on the bottom of a bluff in Odenville, Alabama, on February 26, 1994.
She was hitch-hiking from Chattanooga, Tennessee, to her mother’s house in West Monroe, Louisiana, when four teenagers offered her a ride. Prosecutors claim the teens took her to a wooded place and assaulted and beat her.
They hurled her off a cliff, then returned to mutilate her body. A medical examiner said that the victim’s face was damaged enough to identify her from an earlier X-ray of her spine.
Investigators said the youths were identified as suspects after one showed a friend one of Vickie Deblieux’s severed fingers and boasted about the murder.
