Alife May, a seasoned League One striker from Charlton Athletic, cost the Blues £775,000. Many in the league anticipated that May would be the one to lead Birmingham City back to the Championship. May hasn’t, however, reached the peak of recent years.
May has scored more than 20 goals in each of the last three seasons, including two in which she scored 23. He has only scored five goals in 13 appearances, despite those outstanding stats. However, who is responsible for May’s lack of objectives?
Davies told Birmingham Live that May had to play a different position than in prior seasons due to the acquisition of Jay Stansfield. Davies stated:
“Alfie has performed admirably since joining, and his overall figures show that he has done well.
Since Jay has entered the game and had a significant influence, I have played him as a 10 even though his position is a 9.
“Alfie has had to play that role because he is intelligent, capable, and able to connect the play.” Although that’s not his ideal part, he can perform it.
Although he’s not the nine in the last line receiving the same goal return, he has ultimately adjusted to it rather well and contributed to some outstanding performances.
How Has May Done this Season?
May scored goals early in the season, just as many had predicted. He scored four goals in a row, but he was dropped deeper to make room for Stansfield, who came from Fulham, a Premier League team, to play in the number nine slot.
May has only managed one goal in nine games since matchday four. His goal helped Birmingham secure a crucial 1-0 victory over Huddersfield Town. He also recorded two assists throughout those nine games, both of which came in the Blue’s 3-1 victory over Lincoln City.
May has an average WhoScored rating of 6.89 based on his 13 League One outings this season. He is ranked eighth among Birmingham City’s top players based on this ranking.
Despite not hitting the heights he likely would have liked; May is Birmingham’s joint top scorer – tied with Stansfield on five. He also has the joint most goal involvements for the Blues, tied on eight with Willum Willumsson.
Will May Return to His Best Goal Scoring Form? – Opinion
Given the past three seasons May has had, it seems unlikely that his dry spell will carry on for long. As Davies said, he’s adapting to a new role, but it’s a position he can still perform well in.
As we approach the Christmas and New Year period, Birmingham City have plenty of games to play, meaning May has plenty of chances to get scoring again.
May would have likely had his own personal milestones set for this season. With five goals already, he is a quarter of the way to 20, the number he has hit in the past three seasons. With plenty of games still to come, and the quality of the Birmingham side, he could easily hit 20 goals again this season.
