‘Serious’ Crash Near Cardiff City Centre Shuts Road in Grangetown Area
A major road in the Grangetown area of Cardiff was closed for several hours today following a “serious” crash that caused significant disruption near the city centre. Emergency services, including police, fire crews, and paramedics, rushed to the scene early in the morning, where a collision resulted in extensive damage and traffic chaos.
The incident occurred on Penarth Road, a key route connecting Grangetown with the city centre. Authorities quickly cordoned off the area to investigate the circumstances of the crash and ensure public safety. Motorists were advised to avoid the area, and traffic was diverted via alternative routes, leading to significant congestion on surrounding roads.
Eyewitnesses reported a large emergency response, with several police cars, ambulances, and fire engines at the scene. One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, described hearing a loud bang just after sunrise. “When I looked out the window, I saw several vehicles stopped and debris scattered across the road. It looked very serious,” they said.
The police have yet to confirm the number of vehicles involved or the severity of any injuries sustained. However, unconfirmed reports suggest that multiple people were treated at the scene before being taken to nearby hospitals.
The closure caused significant disruption for commuters during the busy morning rush hour. Buses serving the area were rerouted, and commuters faced delays of up to 45 minutes. Businesses in the area also experienced challenges as delivery vehicles were unable to access the closed section of the road.
Local authorities urged patience from the public while emergency services conducted their work. A Cardiff Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of the incident on Penarth Road and are working closely with emergency services to manage the situation. We advise all motorists to plan alternative routes and allow extra time for travel.”
South Wales Police have launched an investigation into the crash. In a statement, they confirmed:
“A section of Penarth Road in Grangetown has been closed following a serious collision. Emergency services are in attendance, and the public is advised to avoid the area while we carry out inquiries. Further updates will be provided in due course.”
The road closure remains in effect as investigators assess the scene. It is not yet clear when the road will reopen, but local officials are working to restore normal traffic flow as quickly as possible.
Authorities have appealed to anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to come forward to aid the investigation. Meanwhile, they have reiterated the importance of road safety, particularly in busy urban areas.
This developing story has left the community shaken, and residents are eagerly awaiting further updates. As more details emerge, the focus will remain on supporting those affected and understanding the cause of the crash to pre
vent future incidents.
