Since Celtic defeated RB Leipzig 3-1 in the Champions League, Nicolas Kühn has received a lot of attention in the German media.
The fact that the 24-year-old scored two of those goals is undeniably significant; but, the fact that he has 10 goals and 11 assists for Celtic this season tells a much greater tale.
Kühn has made some odd career choices, and there is now speculation in Germany that the transfer to Celtic was a wise one that led to the player joining the German national team.
This week’s edition of SportBild featured an interview with the man of the moment, who spoke about his desire to represent Germany at the 2026 World Cup.
When asked if manager Julian Nagelsmann had contacted him yet, the Celtic player replied: “Unfortunately not yet. Every boy who plays football dreams of one day playing for the national team. I’ve often stated that joining the DFB team is a major objective of mine.
“I am confident in my ability to play for the national team, and I am open about my desire to compete in the 2026 World Cup in the United States. However, there is no other option than to continue working hard, scoring goals, and preparing. The rest will follow by itself.”
When asked if Barcelona was interested in his development, Kühn responded, “Yes, that is true. Even before I moved to RB Leipzig’s boarding school at the age of 14, Barça and my agent were in contact. They wanted to sign me even before my tenure at Ajax Amsterdam (which began in 2018). But I saw a better chance of making a breakthrough at Ajax.
That was another wise decision by Kühn, who will continue to garner club interest if he maintains his impressive start to the season.
If he achieves his aim of making the 2026 World Cup, Celtic will have to battle hard to keep him ahead of and beyond that tournament.
