20 Firefighters Battle Large Blaze at Middlesbrough Church in Early Hours

A large fire engulfed a historic church in Middlesbrough during the early hours of this morning, prompting a significant response from local fire crews. Around 20 firefighters were dispatched to tackle the blaze, which broke out at One Church on Linthorpe Road.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after 3:00 AM when flames and thick smoke were spotted emanating from the church building. Fire crews from Cleveland Fire Brigade responded swiftly, deploying four fire engines to the scene.

Linthorpe Road was closed to traffic as a safety precaution, with authorities advising residents to avoid the area. “Our priority was to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to neighboring properties,” a fire service spokesperson said.

The fire caused significant damage to the church’s roof and interior, with large sections of the building left charred and unstable. Smoke damage is also evident on the church’s facade and surrounding structures.

Reverend Sarah Davies, the church’s pastor, expressed her devastation at the loss. “This building has been a cornerstone of our community for generations. We are heartbroken but grateful no one was hurt,” she said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Early reports suggest the blaze may have originated in the roof area, but fire officials have not confirmed any details. Police are also involved in the inquiry to determine if there are any suspicious circumstances.

The road closure caused minor disruptions to morning commuters, with diversions put in place. Residents living near the church were temporarily evacuated as a precaution but were allowed to return to their homes once the fire was under control.

Local leaders and residents have already pledged their support to the church community. “It’s a tragic loss for Middlesbrough, but we will come together to support rebuilding efforts,” said Councillor Elaine Watson.

The fire service confirmed that their efforts successfully prevented the fire from spreading further, and crews remain on-site to monitor for potential flare-ups. Further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
