Birmingham City’s summer transfer window buying spree was widely reported, and they haven’t stopped yet. Journalist Alan Nixon claims on Patreon that the Blues want to bolster their roster by adding a defender in January.
Given the enormous sums of money they have spent, City wants to get promoted from League One at the first attempt since any other outcome would be viewed as a failure. They want to add more defensive options to the club to assist increase their chances.
Currently, Birmingham are second in the League One table with 30 points from 13 games – they also have a game in hand over league leaders Wycombe Wanderers. As things stand, they have won nine, drawn three and lost one.
Do Birmingham City need a new defender?
Even if the Blues appear determined to add a new defender, it does not appear necessary at this stage of the campaign. Only Wrexham and Exeter City have allowed fewer goals than them in 13 League One games, with only 12 goals given up.
They also have a lot of depth at the back. Dion Sanderson, Krystian Bielik, Christoph Klarer, and Ben Davies are their four center halves. However, they appear a little thinner when playing full back.
Ethan Laird and Alfons Sampsted play right back for Birmingham, while Lee Buchanan and Alex Cochrane can play left back. Despite this, Buchanan and Laird have limited options for a full back because they are both now injured.
Therefore, it might be preferable for the Blues to acquire a versatile full back who can play on the left or right side of defense if they are looking to add a defender during the January transfer window.
