Sheffield United sent Harry Souttar transfer warning after Leicester City loan star’s future admission.
The Championship season is still far from over, but there is already an intriguing contest for Sheffield United’s player of the season. Vini Souza will be an obvious candidate if he continues his recent form, while Harrison Burrows remains one of the division’s highest-rated players thus far, according to Whoscored.com.
Another viable alternative may be Australian international Harry Souttar, who has been a tower of strength – both figuratively and practically – since joining Bramall Lane on loan from Leicester City last summer. He has given a commanding presence to a backline that was too easily and frequently penetrated in the Premier League last season, and has played an important role in the club’s amazing recovery since relegation.
United enter Saturday’s Championship game against Coventry City with the league’s second-best defensive record, having conceded only seven times this season and only twice at home. The 6ft 7in centre-half has only appeared 15 times for the Blades, but United fans have seen enough to want him to stay at Bramall Lane on a permanent basis.
The player would be open to that prospect as well, having regained his love of football at United after a frustrating stint on the sidelines at the King Power Stadium. However, the Foxes paid Stoke City £15 million for his services last January and would hope to return at least a major percentage of that if they were to cut their losses, meaning United would require promotion or movement in their long-running takeover story to have a realistic chance.
And the Blades have been told that if they want to sign Souttar permanently, they may need to be decisive, with his form this season attracting the attention of rival clubs. “As it stands at the moment, it looks like an inspired signing by Chris Wilder,” commentator Carlton Palmer, formerly of Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United, told Football League World.
“He’s been outstanding for Sheffield United, particularly in the local derby against Sheffield Wednesday.” He was bold in the air, strong on the ground, and has created an excellent defensive partnership. They have been fantastic. It’ll be amazing if they can keep doing what they’re doing, and other clubs will be interested in Souttar based on his current performance.
“Glasgow Rangers have been connected with him in the past, but Chris Wilder doesn’t have to be concerned just now. He’s on loan until the end of the season, and the main goal is to earn promotion. Would he be a decent Premier League signing? Of course, he would play for Sheffield United, since if they are promoted, their next goal is simply to stay in the Premier League. We all know how difficult it is to get promoted from the Championship to the Premier League. “But he has experience and has been outstanding since making the switch.”It’s excellent news for both Sheffield United and Chris Wilder. He’s there till the end of the season, so there’s no need for concern for the club right now, but they’ll clearly hope that when the new owners take over, this deal will be finalized and he can add to the squad. The longer Souttar stays there and continues to play like this, the more likely it is that other clubs will be interested in signing him by the conclusion of the season. Chris Wilder will aim to finish this one sooner rather than later assuming they can afford his wage.”
