Sheffield United takeover update emerges as Steve Rosen seeks to finalise deal

Sheffield United could be set for new ownership in the near future, but Steve Rosen is looking for an extra backer to satisfy the EFL regarding a deal.

With a broad agreement claimed to be in place for Prince Abdullah to sell the club, Alan Nixon revealed earlier this week that a significant barrier is preventing the deal from taking place.

Rosen and his group have yet to meet the EFL’s financial demands, while the takeover saga drags on. The most recent update comes from Nixon, who recounts the American’s need for additional support to reassure the powers-that-be that he can sustain the club for the next few years.

Sheffield United’s off-field fortunes have been, to say the least, uneven in recent years, with promotion to the Premier League last year followed by a disappointing top-flight season.

Chris Wilder returned to the Bramall Lane dugout, and they finished with only 16 points. In fact, it was the third-lowest points total since the Premier League’s inception last season, after only Sunderland in 2005/06 (15 points) and Derby County in 2007/08 (11 points).

Sheffield United are hoping to put last season’s disappointment behind them in order to rebuild, regroup, and move forward. Despite the necessity to handle the takeover scenario behind the scenes for the entire summer, they are currently ranked in the top two in the championship.

However, a takeover would boost the atmosphere even more, so it is unfortunate news that it appears to have met another stumbling block, namely the delay in completing the deal ahead of a critical January window.

Despite the fact that the Blades’ summer window was initially intended to be limited to free-agent acquisitions and loans, they ended up spending a significant amount of money. However, more funding is now required.

In recent weeks, it has been stated that the group led by Rosen simply needed to reach an agreement with the EFL on conditions to close the deal, which is not thought to be a problem.

Rosen has apparently been in talks to purchase the club for weeks, according to Bloomberg. However, other parties have also expressed interest in the club in recent months.

Henry Mauriss had already had a proposal accepted, and Dozy Mmobuosi was also thought to be interested in owning the Blades, but neither man was able to get the South Yorkshire outfit.

The arrangement with Rosen was apparently supposed to be disclosed last week, but it may take some time until a takeover is completed, depending on when the consortium can meet the League’s request.

Nixon is stating that an additional donor is necessary to guarantee the club’s funding for the following two seasons. However, Rosen is allegedly “optimistic about bringing in a new ally” to donate the much-needed funds.

According to Nixon’s newest report, it should be completed in time for a “January splash” in order to improve Wilder’s team ahead of a second-half drive for automatic promotion this season.

According to The Sheffield Star, the deal could involve Marvel movie director Joe Russo and health company CEO Helmy Eltoukhy.

Eltoukhy would reportedly join Rosen in leading the proposal, with Russo another potential investor in the company after his success in the film industry.
