The Uruguay Football Association [AUF] confirmed on Sunday that Santiago Bueno, a defender for Wolverhampton Wanderers, has been left out of the Uruguay squad for this international break. According to their official website, the 26-year-old arrived at the national team camp with an injury; it is said that he was struck while playing for Wolves, though it is unclear what the nature of the setback is. Bueno has played every minute for Gary O’Neil’s team in their last four league games, including Wolves’ 2-0 victory over Southampton on November 9.
When Bueno arrived, he was tested by the medical personnel of the national team. He continued to play for Marcelo Bielsa’s team as a result of the results, which was decided upon after consulting the Premier League team.
The English team’s position on the defender was altered on Sunday. Wolves “officially requested” that Bueno be pulled, and the AUF acknowledged that this request was granted. As a result, the player “returns to the club” and will not be included in the squad to play Brazil.
Early this morning, Sunday, November 17, his club formally asked the player to come back. Given this desire and with the player’s health as the top priority, Santiago will not fly to Brazil and is not eligible for the call-up, according to a statement.
O’Neil and Wolves have a concern about Bueno for the meeting against Fulham on Saturday.
