Belief things would have been ‘very different’ if player arrived later at Brighton – Manager never trusted him

After completing IF Brommapojkarna’s youth program, the striker played for the first squad for more than two years

before being acquired by Brighton from the Swedish team in January 2018.

Gyökeres played eight games for Brighton, managing one goal and one assist. Before selling him to Coventry City,

they loaned him to Swansea City, St. Pauli, and Swansea City.

In July 2023, the Portuguese team decided to sign the 26-year-old after being persuaded by his performances for

Coventry City. With 66 goals and 19 assists in 68 games, including 23 goals and four assists this season, he has been

a standout for the Lions.

In order to examine Gyökeres’ ascent at Sporting, the Monday edition of Sport spoke with former Brighton defender

Bruno Saltor, O Jogo reporter Pedro Cadima, and A Bola reporter Miguel Mendes.

In 2019, Saltor played with the Sweden international at The Amex before ending his playing career with the Seagulls.

When Gyökeres moved to Brighton, Chris Hughton was the manager. In 2019, Graham Potter took over. If the

current Sporting star had joined the Premier League team later, Saltor thinks he may have performed better.

It would have been very different if he had come later, when the team was more well-established in the Premier

League. He claimed that the coach in attendance at the time chose a different kind of player.

Cadima praises Rúben Amorim, the former Sporting manager, for his contribution to Gyökeres’ development.

He is a player who appears to be able to crush any defensive line, team, or opponent. However, he is more than

simply an attacker; he is also a fighter, can help, and holds the ball well from his back, according to Cadima.

The version of Gyökeres that we are seeing today is greatly influenced by Rúben Amorim. He had already done it

with Pedro Porro, Palhinha, and Matheus Nunes.
