Chris Sutton reckons Celtic can outgun Rangers to the signing of Motherwell sensation Lennon Miller – even though the 18-year-old wouldn’t be a first-team pick at Parkhead.
While the pundit believes this show of force would be a significant blow to the title race, he is also adamant that it is not part of a double move that includes the departure of Nicolas Kuhn. The German winger has been in impressive form, scoring two goals against RB Leipzig in the Champions League. However, Sutton believes a £30 million bid is only “food for thought” and that the time is not right to cash in.
He told the Daily Record: “It would make sense for Celtic to make a play for Lennon Miller in January, but there is no point in cashing in on Nicolas Kuhn. You know it’s international week when fans start talking about transfers and what-if scenarios. However, there is no smoke without fire, and there has been a lot of heat surrounding Motherwell’s precious asset and Celtic’s player of the season thus far. In terms of Miller. I get where they’re coming from. He’s undeniably a tremendous potential, possibly the best young player in Scotland. Of course, Celtic will be well aware of him. They’d be crazy not to keep an eye on him.
“Miller has played over 50 games for Motherwell and has been a standout in the most of them. There was also an outstanding performance against Celtic lately, which Brendan Rodgers would have taken note of. The question for Miller – and Celtic – is whether he can make the team right now. You have to admit that would not be the case. You gaze at Luke McCowan. I think he’s done fantastically well since moving from Dundee, and he looks every bit the Celtic player. However, you could say that he is currently sixth in line for a midfielder spot, trailing only Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate, Arne Engels, and Paulo Bernardo. Is Miller going to nudge anyone out right now? Unlikely.
“He’s obviously one for the future. There have been many estimates, but it appears that £5 million is the most likely figure. That may seem like a lot for a developing player, but it’s not actually. Celtic can afford it, and if Rangers want to look at the youngster, they might easily outperform them. There’s no way they’re going to pay that much money for a prospect, even if they were burnt by the Lewis Ferguson incident. There was a player they could have signed for a song who is now well above their budget.
