Ex-referee shares the ‘conflict of interest’ officials must tell the SFA Celtic fans will find interesting

The subject of referees has hit the headlines this week and it is one that has been the bug bear of Celtic fans for a long while now.

The David Coote scandal in England sparked a debate on officiating integrity by Ally McCoist concerning Celtic vs Rangers refereeing this week.
McCoist believes it is unnecessary for referees to identify which football teams they support before being assigned games to officiate since it would raise concerns about ‘integrity’.

While the English FA requires referees to identify their football allegiances, former SFA referee Des Roache has revealed what Scotland’s national association expects from its match officials.

Scottish referees don’t need to declare if they support Celtic or Rangers

When asked by journalist Scott McDermott if the SFA requires match officials to announce which side they support, Roache provided an answer that would pique the interest of Celtic supporters.

Roache told Hotline Live [18m]: “No, Scott. It doesn’t. The only thing we need to consider as a conflict of interest is if there are any family members or others involved.

“So one that stands out is Stephen McLean, whose brother, Brian, also played senior football for Motherwell. It truly began while I was a junior member of the organization.

“I had a family member who was the manager of Renfrew Juniors, thus I was never able to attend a Renfrew Juniors game, etc. It’s that small.
