Work to begin on city’s sporting quarter in 2025

Following the dismissal of a court challenge, a sporting development that had been delayed for years has been approved.

The Ashton Gate Sporting Quarter project by Bristol Sport, which would include a hotel and a new basketball arena for the Bristol Flyers, is currently scheduled to begin construction in 2025.

The High Court has finally dismissed a legal dispute between a trash firm and council planners that had delayed the development’s launch, and there is no longer any opportunity for an appeal.

The 5,000-seat multipurpose arena will be constructed adjacent to Ashton Gate Stadium, the home field of the Bristol Bears rugby union club and Bristol City Football Club.

The sporting quarter’s ideas were initially disclosed in 2018, but they have been hampered by legal issues and delays.

An authorised proposal for 510 new houses at Longmoor was related to the development, but ETM Recycling filed a judicial appeal in 2023 because of concerns that the noise from its nearby plant would disturb the locals.

During a High Court hearing, the Honourable Mr. Justice Lavender dismissed the appeal, ruling that there were no exceptional circumstances that would grant ETM further time beyond the legal deadline to contest the Longmoor Village planning permission.

Bristol Sport has confirmed that construction will start in 2025.

The new 5,000-seat stadium will have a significantly larger capacity for the Bristol Flyers.

For the past ten years, they have performed at SGS College, which can accommodate 750 people.

“This has been a long time coming, and the Flyers are eager for it to begin,” stated Lisa Knights, the team’s CEO.

“Having a larger, purpose-built venue will ensure the Flyers’ financial sustainability and an exciting future for basketball in Bristol and the south west, as our current home, SGS College Arena, regularly draws sell-out crowds.”
