Norwich City vs. Bristol City: Liam Manning’s preview
The latest Championship manager to be thrilled by Norwich City’s makeover is Liam Manning, but the Bristol City
manager is planning more harm for the Canaries when he returns home.
After a heartbreaking midweek loss to Sheffield United, the former Norwich season ticket holder returns to his
hometown this weekend in the hopes of seeing a response from his team.
Due to a slew of injuries that have stretched their team to the breaking point in the past week, Norwich is also in a
difficult position following back-to-back losses to Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday.
Ahead of Saturday’s match, Manning is dealing with his own injury issues and anticipates a close battle against
Johannes Hoff Thorup’s team.
During his midweek press conference, the Robins manager stated, “[It’s] an extremely difficult game.”
“You only have to see with the results [in the Championship], like Millwall beating Leeds last night, it’s so
unpredictable. The margins are so fine, they’re so tight.
“It’s a tough game; Norwich obviously have had a decent start. I think they’re similar to us; they’ve got a few injuries
themselves as well. It’s a tough place to go at any time.
“But we should look forward to the challenge. I remember going there at the back end of last season and,
performance-wise, it was one of the most enjoyable in terms of what we wanted the team to look like. We had a bit of
everything that day, albeit not scoring the goals. In terms of a place to go, we know it’s difficult but it’s one that with
any game we should be looking forward to.”
Norwich are now one-year unbeaten on home turf, but that record is expected to be significantly stressed by the
Robins with nine players sidelined – more than anyone else in the Championship.
Despite the current on-pitch challenges, Thorup has made a bright first-impression and has been constantly praised
by his fellow second tier bosses.
His Championship peers have praised Johannes Hoff Thorup. Manning stated that there are certainly variations in
their setup, style of play, and goals.
Regarding the players’ profiles, there are certain parallels. Even when you have players with particular traits, they
still show up.
However, there is unquestionably a contrast between their current actions and those of the previous season. We’ll do
our assignments. We will ensure that the players are informed. The greatest amount of effort is put into ourselves,
and we must play and do the things we desire.
Sheffield United’s two late goals in midweek’s thrilling victory at Ashton Gate put a devastating end to Bristol City’s
nine-game winning streak.
That kind of loss can have more long-term effects, as Norwich learnt when they played Cardiff last weekend.
The task for Manning, who is celebrating his first year as manager of the team, is to come up with a quick answer.
The 39-year-old hopes his team can repeat the calibre of play that won them praise and a point in April during
Norwich’s run to the playoffs.
“It’s not the be all and end all but it’s important to do everything that you can,” Manning told Bristol Live.
Bristol City lost heartbreakingly to Sheffield United in the middle of the week. “After consecutive losses to Derby
Country and Blackburn Rovers, we bounced back and had a respectable run of games and outcomes. We’ll be
exerting every effort to try and perform and win this weekend, just as we do in every game.
“For me, that’s the most important part. How do you react? How do you stay together and accurately reflect? How
can you avoid becoming overly fixated on it? It’s uncontrollable; it happened. We didn’t want to lose. The main
takeaway for the players is that we choose what we carry forward from the past, even if we most likely didn’t deserve to.
“We choose which state to enter that game in when we get to Norwich, right before kickoff. We must draw confidence
from our performances in the games thus far. We must have faith, courage, and unity. We choose to move on with a
lot of things, and that’s a crucial consideration for Saturday.
