Coventry City are interested in Wycombe Wanderers manager Matt Bloomfield as they look for a replacement for the ousted Mark Robins. Coventry City fired Robins following their 2-1 home loss to Derby County on Wednesday night, which dropped them to 17th place in the Championship table.
It means that Coventry are seeking for a new manager following Robins’ seven-and-a-half years in charge, and whomever is selected will have large shoes to fill after leading the Sky Blues from League Two to the Championship and being one win away from promotion to the Premier League by 2023.
Bloomfield, who has led Wycombe to the top of the League One table, has piqued the interest of Coventry, according to The Guardian, with the 40-year-old regarded as one of the best young managers in the EFL.
Coventry City, Matt Bloomfield verdict emerges
We asked Ryan Murphy, our Coventry City fan pundit, if he’d welcome a move for Bloomfield, and he said employing a bright young manager is something he’d like to see the Sky Blues do. Ryan told Football League World: “Matt Bloomfield is someone I don’t know much about, other than that he’s doing a fantastic job this season with Wycombe, who are currently top of the league.
“He is someone I would expect the club to go for over taking the risk of someone like Frank Lampard; just because they have a name doesn’t mean they’ll be great, especially in a situation like this where we need someone to come in and hit the ground running while working on a tight budget.
“Someone like Matt Bloomfield might be the one that they believe can accomplish it, so that wouldn’t surprise me, looking down at the league below and seeing who is doing a good job right now rather than going down the big name route, which would put me at risk.
“So yeah, it wouldn’t surprise me, and I’d welcome it for sure.”
Matt Bloomfield deserves a chance at Championship management
It’s only the beginning of November, yet Bloomfield has Wycombe at the top of the League One table, ahead of clubs with large budgets such as Wrexham and Birmingham City; while the Blues have a game in hand, it’s still an outstanding performance.
League One table as it stands – 07/11/24 | ||||
---|---|---|---|---|
Position | Club | P | GD | Pts |
1. | Wycombe Wanderers | 13 | 15 | 29 |
2. | Birmingham City | 12 | 12 | 29 |
3. | Wrexham | 13 | 11 | 25 |
4. | Mansfield Town | 12 | 6 | 24 |
5. | Lincoln City | 13 | 4 | 24 |
6. | Bolton Wanderers | 13 |
Bloomfield just led his team to an amazing 5-0 victory away to Stockport County, a result that made people sit up and take notice of their great season thus far, and it’s little surprise he’s attracting Championship interest.
He may be new to management, having taken his first position at Colchester United just over two years ago, but he has proven himself to be a promising young manager during his time at Colchester and now Wycombe.
Bloomfield is a Wycombe icon due to his time as a player and now as a manager, and it remains to be seen whether he would want to leave a league-leading club, but he surely deserves the opportunity to become a Championship manager considering how the season has started.
