Dimitar Berbatov praises Tottenham’s entertaining football

Tottenham Hotspur are showing promising signs of improvement of late, and former Spurs striker Dimitar Berbatov believes the club could be on their way to a trophy win in the near future.

It was a week to remember for Spurs last week, as they defeated Manchester City in the Carabao Cup before demolishing Aston Villa 4-1 in the league at the weekend

The display against Villa, particularly in the second half, was the kind of exhilarating football fans have been crying out for, and showcased the best of Ange Postecoglou‘s attacking style of play.

Of course, the defeat to Galatasaray was not ideal, but it was a much-changed Tottenham XI in a very hostile atmosphere.

According to former Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov in his latest appearance on Sky Sports, the recent performances have been exactly what the fans at the club deserve and are in keeping with the traditions of the club.

He said: “This is what Spurs are: unpredictable. Sometimes, you expect one thing and something else happens. But the good thing is they bounced back and they were great in the second half.

“This [style of play] is how it used to be, how it should be. Entertaining the fans, and scoring goals, with composure [like Dominic Solanke’s first]. He’s a striker, he feeds on confidence and that comes from goals. When you score goals, it doesn’t matter how, it’s just about scoring, and then you feel better.”

Silverware beckons for Spurs

Much has been made of Tottenham’s trophy drought, which has now spanned more than 16 years. There are big expectations that Postecoglou can be the man to end that wait, though.

After the Villa game, statistics show Spurs have made encouraging steps forward in a number of areas. Most notably, the team are creating more chances, and conceding less.

The xG for Spurs after the first ten games last season was 1.78, while it is now at 2.01, higher than anyone in the Premier League. Their xG against has dropped from 1.27 to 1.16 this season.

Berbatov suggests these statistics need to translate into substantial success now. He said: “They are improving, that will give them confidence. Let’s hope it’s going to produce more points on the board and who knows finally maybe win a trophy.”

Tottenham are on the rise

It’s important not to read too much into statistics like xG and use our eyes instead, but whether you look at data or the action on the pitch, Tottenham are looking really strong right now. There have been a couple of blips here and there, but it would be foolish to expect perfection so early into this project
