Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii, a rugby league convert, will start in the centres for Australia against England on Saturday at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium in his professional rugby union debut.
The 21-year-old former Sydney Roosters wing or centre recently left the league in a three-year agreement allegedly worth A$5.35 million (£2.7 million).
Suaalii, who grew up playing both codes, most recently represented the Australian Schoolboys in rugby union in 2019.
He is accompanied in midfield by Len Ikitau.
Regular starting inside the center. Hunter Paisami was ruled out of the Wallabies’ autumn tour due to a calf injury.
Suaalii’s participation is the lone alteration to the Wallabies’ starting XV, which was defeated 33-13 by New Zealand in their previous match in September.
Number eight. Harry Wilson heads the team, which is accompanied in the back row by Fraser McReight and Rob Valetini.
Taniela Tupou is part of an experienced front row, and Noah Lolesio takes over at fly-half.
Former Saracens lock Will Skelton and centre Samu Kerevi, who have not played competitive rugby since their Japanese side Urayasu D-Rocks ended their season in May, are not included in the matchday squad.
“Playing in front of vocal home crowds in some of the most renowned rugby stadiums in the world is an exciting prospect, with many of the players on their first spring tour,” Joe Schmidt, the team’s manager, stated.
Australia has lost its past three matches under Schmidt, finishing last in this year’s Rugby Championship.
Their last victory over England was in 2022, and it was their sole success over Borthwick’s team since the 2015 Rugby World Cup.
Schmidt’s team will face all of the home nations in the Autumn Nations Series, beginning with Wales in Cardiff next Sunday, followed by Scotland on November 24 and ending with Ireland, whom Schmidt previously coached, on November 30.
Australia: Wright; Kellaway, Suaalii, Ikitau, Pietsch; Lolesio, Gordon; Bell, Faessler, Tupou, Frost, Williams, Valetini, McReight; Wilson (captain).
Replacements include Paenga-Amosa, Slipper, Alaalatoa, Salakaia-Loto, Gleeson, McDermott, Donaldson, and Jorgensen.
