According to John Percy of the Telegraph, Gary O’Neil is facing mounting pressure as manager of Wolverhampton
Wanderers, and a loss to Southampton this weekend might result in his termination.
Wolves’ poor start to the season—they have lost all ten of their first ten games—has left them at the bottom of the
Premier League. The team is becoming increasingly frustrated with their current performance, and this Saturday’s
home matchup against fellow struggling Southampton is a “six pointer” for early season relegation.
The Wolves management supports and admires O’Neil, who signed a new four-year deal in August. However, the
team has come to the realization that this run cannot go on. A loss against the Saints and a subpar showing by the
team might lead the West Midlanders’ management to reprimand the English head coach during the international
break.
Southampton Game Pivotal for O’Neil
Despite being predicted to lose, O’Neil, who was appointed as Julen Lopetegui’s successor under difficult
circumstances, made an impression at Molineux last season, helping Wolves secure a comfortable 14th place finish.
The club was looking to stabilize after switching head coaches since Nuno Espirito Santo left in 2021, and this
surpassing of expectations prompted them to offer the former Bournemouth boss a new long-term contract in the
summer.
However, O’Neil’s future is now in question due to the new season’s dismal beginning. There have been rumors that
David Moyes might be open to take over, and that Wolves might make a play for the seasoned manager.
O’Neil isn’t happy about the rumors that the team is hiring other coaches, and the Telegraph speculates that this
Saturday’s match against Southampton might be the last straw for the 41-year-old. The Molineux’s superiors are
‘very hesitant’ to let go of the strategist because they consider him to be one of the best young operators in England.
Senior officials at the club just want a win on Sunday to open the season, and Wolves are adamant that they stay
united behind the scenes. There’s a sense that performances haven’t been as bad as the outcomes, but a defeat to
Russell Martin’s team might dispel this belief, and the international break would be a great time to switch up the
dugout.
