It may not have been the scoreline that Manqoba Mngqithi felt his Mamelodi Sundowns team deserved, but their 2-0 win over Polokwane City in their Betway Premiership match on Wednesday was significant.
Sundowns entered the game in second place on the log, six points behind the Orlando Pirates.
The victory kept Sundowns, who are chasing their eighth league title in a succession, close to the Soweto Giants, who have won seven of their first seven games.
Sundowns had twice as many shots at goal as Polokwane in Pretoria’s Loftus Versfeld, with 12 efforts. They also possessed the vast bulk of possession (72%). In addition, Sundowns distributed 669 permits to the 253 visitors.
Complete domination
Sundowns statistically dominated their opponents.
“I believe we started the game nicely. We wanted more mobility and speed of play. And I believe that’s what we captured in the early phases of the game, trying to see if we could create any opportunities,” Mngqithi added.
“But as the half continued, we became more comfortable after scoring the goal. We started seeing more midfielders fall short in front of the opponent, which reduced our ability to generate issues between the lines and invite the following line.
“That made our final stages of the first half less dangerous than they could have been. I believe we started the second half fairly well. In my perspective, this is probably the best start to the second half of the season.
“We wanted a result in this game, and we got the results.”
