Chris Sutton has always defended Celtic.
The former Hoops striker knows firsthand just how massive the Scottish champions are and last night’s 3-1 victory over RB Leipzig in the Champions League proved it once again.
The atmosphere inside Parkhead was electric and could not be dampened even when Christoph Baumgartner gave his side the lead with a header from a corner.
Nicolas Kuhn would curl in a delicious equaliser before the same attacker would tap home just before the break to turn the game following good work from both Reo Hatate and Greg Taylor down the left-flank.
Hatate would put the gloss on the evening with the third goal from a Peter Gulacsi goalkeeping howler between the sticks for the Germans and seal the points on what was an excellent night of European football in Glasgow.
German media issued a warning to Leipzig over their crisis defeat, and it was certainly a far-cry from just a few short weeks ago when Borussia Dortmund humbled Brendan Rodgers and his squad in Germany which had certain pundits sharpening their knives.
Rodgers was accused of rejecting pragmatism and being too gung-ho for the competition in what was a familiar failing for Celtic in Europe.
Chris Sutton accused Celtic’s critics of staying silent after they beat RB Leipzig
Now, though – after the manager’s tactics once again proved fruitful – former striker Sutton was quick to applaud the Scottish Premiership league leaders who now sit on seven points in the revamped UCL League Phase.
Celts have two wins, one loss and one draw to their record and Sutton called out those who criticised the club following their 7-1 hammering in Dortmund.
Where do Celtic sit in the Champions League table after win vs RB Leipzig?
The big Englishman put them on blast for remaining silent this week after a convincing win for the Hoops on their own patch agaisnt a side currently sitting second in the Bundesliga – four points above BVB in the division.
Taking to social media, Sutton tweeted: “We have not heard from those people putting the boot into Celtic and Scottish football after Dortmund…”
His post racked up thousands of likes and shares with fans quick to agree with their hero.
Celtic are pushing towards a playoff spot and sit 13th in the Champions League table.
The first eight clubs make it through automatically and from nine to 24 will compete in a knockout.
