After a terrible start to the season, the Old Gold need to defeat the Saints in order to turn things around.
Wolves are still without a Premier League victory as the November international break draws near, which could jeopardize Gary O’Neil’s managerial job.
With just one victory in their last 20 league games, Wolves’ dismal start is continuing from their dismal end to the previous season.
Gary O’Neil criticises Wolves midfielder Tommy Doyle
Wolves showed promise on the tenth day of the game, but they lost to Crystal Palace in a match that saw them finish last in the league.
Due to a lack of focus, Palace managed to equalize after the hosts rallied from behind to take the lead.
The game’s major talking point wasn’t O’Neil’s two disappointing concessions to Oliver Glasner’s team; instead, it was his choice to hook Tommy Doyle shortly after the hour mark.
Since then, the manager has discussed Doyle as a player on Express and Star, making ambiguous remarks.
“He came from Manchester City’s academy, obviously he had a successful time in the Championship, but still isn’t proven at Premier League level,” O’Neil remarked.
We continue to assist him in adjusting to that. He believes that he should play every minute of every Premier League game because he believes in himself.
“But he’s still a young central midfielder with a lot of skill and a great boy, but not much Premier League experience.”
Following his public declaration that Doyle does not meet Premier League standards, O’Neil maintained that
“I believe that a big part of him anticipates playing each week. I don’t think he’s satisfied with his watching brief, but he has a strong belief in his abilities.
Perhaps he realized that he was learning and that there would be a period of adjustment when he first arrived here.
“But I know he feels like he’s ready. Of course, then it’s on me to judge how ready he is and what week suits him best.”
O’Neil’s comments will frustrate fans
Although O’Neil wasn’t especially critical of Doyle, it’s unclear why he chose to make his evaluation of the player in good form public.
One one wonder if the boss would have made such statements if he hadn’t faced criticism for using the Englishman instead.
There was a recurring element in the coach’s public criticism of Jorgen Strand Larsen after hooking him against Manchester City.
O’Neil’s remarks are an example of overcompensating for a publicly criticized decision.
Fans chanted, “You don’t know what you’re doing,” when Doyle was pulled against Palace. The manager has since come out and used his players’ “inexperience” to make a point. At a point where Wolves must unite in every way, supporters will not be happy to see O’Neil publicly criticize a player who is giving it his all just to justify his actions.
