Michael Stewart shares what Rangers fans told him at Hampden about facing Celtic in League Cup final

After the Parkhead team defeated Aberdeen on Saturday, Celtic now knows they will play Rangers in the League Cup final the following month.

With goals from Kyogo Furuhashi, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Nicolas Kuhn, and hat-trick hero Daizen Maeda, the Hoops humiliated Aberdeen 6-0.

Michael Stewart revealed what the Ibrox fans seated next to him at Hampden informed him about the possibility of facing Brendan Rodgers’ squad next month after Rangers defeated Motherwell on Sunday to face Celtic in the final.

Michael Stewarts says Rangers fans fear a Celtic ‘drubbing’

When Philippe Clement’s team was trailing 1-0 at halftime, Stewart, who was providing commentary for Premier Sports at the Rangers game, remarked that the Ibrox crowd appeared content with the defeat because it meant they wouldn’t have to play Celtic in December.

“I mean, anything can happen in a cup final,” Stewart said to The Scottish Football Social Club. “You know, someone could be sent off, someone could get a penalty kick, someone’s knee could deflect, and then you can hang on to something so you can never write it off completely.”

However, I can tell you that there was anxiety about them based on my conversations with a couple of the Ranger supporters who were nearby.

“This happened at halftime, and they’re anxious about even making it to the cup final. They were practically saying, “If we don’t make it to the cup final, at least we won’t get smashed,” and I was thinking, “You can’t live like that.”

Celtic’s biggest wins over Rangers since 2000

As the Parkhead team has won trophy after trophy over the past 12 years, Celtic has had nearly complete dominance over Rangers since 2012.

And although Celtic supporters of this generation have been relishing it, the Hoops have been dealing the Ibrox club painful losses long before that.

Although many Celtic supporters will be hoping for a spectacular Hampden victory over Rangers next month, any victory will suffice as long as Rodgers is holding the League Cup trophy at full time.
