Janey Godley death: Where will funeral be held for beloved Glasgow comedian who died from cancer at 63

Following the death of popular Scottish comic Janey Godley, admirers are already speculating where her funeral would be held.

On Saturday, November 2, Godley died in hospice care at the age of 63 from ovarian cancer, surrounded by her loved ones. Ashley Storrie, Godley’s daughter, expressed gratitude to fans and medical personnel who assisted with her mother’s end-of-life care.

The BBC Radio Scotland presenter and comedian said the love of her mother’s admirers helped her cope with her sickness. “I’d like to thank you all for your warmth and support. I feel in my heart that she sensed every ounce of love you sent her. “And I believe it kept her going,” she explained.

“I truly believe we got her longer because of all of the love and support in the globe. But that’s it for now. So, thank you again, and bye, Ma – Frank, please get the door.”

Given the family’s preference for secrecy, it’s probable that any funeral arrangements will remain private. However, Godley’s strong ties to Glasgow – her birthplace, her comedic background, and her deep connection to the Scottish public – imply that her family may choose to hold services in the city or the East End, where she grew up and developed her love of comedy.

Born in Campsie, East Dunbartonshire, and raised in Shettleston, Glasgow, Godley has had a huge impact on Scotland’s comic scene. Her career lasted three decades, including standout performances at the Edinburgh Fringe, international tours, and radio shows including BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends.

Godley became a household celebrity during the pandemic thanks to her viral dubbed films, in which she regularly mimicked famous leaders in her own humorous way, including Scotland’s former First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon.

Godley’s impact extended beyond her humour to her charitable work and campaigning for cancer awareness following her own diagnosis in 2021. In her memoir Janey: The Woman That Won’t Shut Up, she reflected on her life, writing, “There isn’t anything I haven’t done. I’ve achieved everything I ever wanted in life.”
