Birmingham City are already plotting an audacious January transfer swoop.
The Blues are apparently ready to submit a second bid for Hannover 96 centre-back Phil Neumann this winter, following a failed attempt in the summer
Chris Davies has been pleased with the progress made this season, but he wants to strengthen his central defensive options well in advance of the likely return to the Championship. Birmingham’s manager is seriously considering Neumann, a very pacy yet tall figure.
Neumann has been a force for German second-tier team Hannover since joining from Holstein Keil in 2022, appearing in 76 games in two and a half seasons. The 27-year-old is capable of playing at center-half, right-back, or even defensive midfield, which may offer Blues considerable options.
According to Football Insider, Birmingham are considering an improved offer for Neumann after their £3.4 million proposal was rejected in the summer. Blues are set to continue their free spending, despite already becoming League One title favourites with a new squad.
Neumann bid could mean bad news for former Blues captain
If Neumann walks through the doors at St Andrew’s @ Knighthead Park in January, Dion Sanderson’s career could be over. The former skipper has already tumbled to fourth place in the centre-back pecking order, and a drop to fifth would make him much more expendable.
Davies prefers new captain Krystian Bielik alongside Christoph Klarer, with Rangers loanee Ben Davies replacing in during Bielik’s injury absence. Sanderson has played only 328 minutes in all competitions this season, and if Neumann is signed, his playing time would be reduced even further.
