Birmingham City: Details emerge of failed Robert Lewandowski transfer move

The 36-year-old striker, who has starred for Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and now Barcelona over the years, is a legendary player in the game who has won the Bundesliga ten times, numerous domestic trophies, La Liga, and the Champions League while scoring hundreds of goals. Former Birmingham City scout Paul Montgomery disclosed that the club was interested in Lewandowski when he was playing for third-tier Polish team Znicz Pruszkow.

However, it has been revealed that Blues were keeping an eye on Lewandowski when he was a teenager and attracted attention with his goal-scoring ability for lower league team Znicz Pruszkow. Lewandowski would eventually join Lech Poznan in the top division before joining Dortmund. Montgomery, speaking to TalkSPORT, provided insight into Blues’ approach and thoughts on the player as he discussed a deal they missed out on.

Alex McLeish applauds the Birmingham City supporters

“It’s weird because I remember we needed a central striker and I’d said to Alex (McLeish) and Alex had spoken to me, and he had a couple of contacts in Poland and said, ‘look, they really like this man’.

“I went and watched him two or three times and I said, ‘listen, he’s a good player, no doubt about it, but he does everything in wide areas’.

He used to whirl and perform all of his tasks in broad spaces. He is not the kind of central striker we require. The rest is history after that. I don’t have to tell you that he’s turned into this incredible goal scorer.

In 2008, Lech Poznan would only pay £320,000 for Lewanowski, and according to Montgomery, Birmingham believed he would have been available for about £250,000 if they had sought him before that transfer.

Birmingham City’s history could’ve looked different with Robert Lewandowski

There will be tales of players that many clubs have lost out on in the past, and this is undoubtedly one of the biggest regrets.

The Blues were earning promotion to the Premier League at the time, but they would only stay in the top division for two years before relegating back to the Championship. Since then, they have not been able to return to the top division.

We can’t predict how things will turn out, but Lewandowski wouldn’t have hurt Birmingham’s chances of making a name for themselves in the Premier League!
