BBC SPORTS. Why Brendan Rodgers was lucky to escape Hampden red as ‘common sense prevails’ over Celtic boss incident.

In the semi-final match, the former whistler praised his former colleague for using common sense and disregarding the rules.

Referee Kevin Clancy received credit for his attitude, while Brendan Rodgers was fortunate to avoid a red card at Hamden.

At the national stadium, the Celtic manager was left looking red-faced after falling while trying to kick the ball back onto the pitch. The match referee gave the Parkhead coach a yellow card. Bobby Madden has acknowledged that Rogers should have been sent to the stands with the rules “very clear,” but he has commended his former referee colleague for using common sense and merely giving him a yellow during the match against Aberdeen in the semi-finals.

Madden writes, “The referee should be praised in this instance as you see the ball leave the field of play for a throw in to Aberdeen and the Celtic manager clearly kicks the ball away delaying the restart for his opponent,” as the caption for a video he shared of Rodgers preparing to boot the ball back onto the turf from the touchline. The referee used common sense by just issuing a yellow card, even though the regulations are extremely clear that this should be a red card.

A screenshot of the rules that reads, “3. Disciplinary action: Sending-off,” was also included in his post. Delaying the start of play by the other side, such as by kicking the ball away, holding onto the ball, or impeding a player’s movement, are examples of sending-off violations.

Jimmy Thelin suffered his first loss since moving to the Granite City as Celtic crushed Aberdeen, scoring six goals in the process. They will now play either Motherwell or Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup Final when they return to Hampden next month.

In retrospect, Rodgers remarked, “To be fair, it was well deserved!” when he hit the deck at Hampden. Over there, I shouldn’t be falling. I booted the ball onto the pitch, which is why. I recovered really fast, most likely due to humiliation. My sneakers made it a little slick, but Kevin made the right choice.
